The ace series of cameras offer fantastic value. The acA1920-40gc is built on the Sony Pregius IMX249 1/1.2" sensor. It offers 2.3 MP (1920 x 1200) resolution with astounding image quality: high quantum efficiency, wide dynamic range, and extremely low noise.

When this camera is configured to use the sensor's full resolution, it can deliver 40 frames/second ("fps"). However, when configured to use less resolution, the frame rate will increase. As examples, 1920 x 1080 delivers 46 fps, 1920 x 820 delivers 60 fps, and 1920 x 480 delivers 100 fps. (Note maximum frame rate also depends on the output format, exposure time and your network hardware. These frame rates were calculated assuming short exposure and "raw" Bayer RG8 output.)

This camera has relatively large 5.86 µm pixels. This enables greater light sensitivity, greater depth of field, and demands less performance from a lens. If configured to use its full resolution, it has an image circle of 13.27 mm and a 1" lens is needed. To instead use a lower cost 2/3" lens, simply configure the camera for less resolution. All the following resolutions can use a 2/3" (11 mm) lens: 1500 x 1126, 1200 x 1200, 1634 x 920, 1440 x 1200. These resolutions can deliver frame rates of 44, 42, 54 and 42 fps, respectively.

Because the Basler ace GigE camera uses the same 29 x 29 mm footprint that has been standard on analog cameras for many years, replacement of analog cameras is easy. Some existing Camera Link cameras and IEEE 1394a or 1394b cameras with this same footprint can also be easily replaced.

Using a Power over Ethernet (“PoE”) configuration, a single cable may be used to apply camera power and to transfer data between this camera and a PC, keeping cable runs to a minimum. An auxiliary connector is provided for terminating the input and output signal – there is one of each. The input may be configured to trigger image acquisition, reset the frame counter, or reset the software trigger count. The output may be configured to indicate acquisition trigger wait, exposure active, flash window, or timer active. Or the output may be controlled via a PC. The auxiliary connector may be used to power the camera if PoE is not available.

The Basler ace provides a full set of features to address a wide range of applications. Pixel data can be output in 8 or 12 bit depth. You may adjust the camera’s black level, gain, area of interest, input debounce, and trigger delay. It features automatic exposure control, pixel binning, horizontal image mirroring, event reporting, sending of test images, and a programmable lookup table. There are also “chunk” features that include a frame counter, time stamp, trigger input counter, and CRC checksum calculator. Note that not all features may be available when using third-party software.

Because this camera is GigE Vision and GenICam compliant, there are many third party software applications and API’s that are compatible. Basler offers their royalty-free Pylon SDK for 32 and 64 bit Windows and Linux platforms.
